I am an unapologetic critic of Islam & feel reform within that religion is key to ultimate victory.

It seems over the last 30 odd years national holidays have become a cause de celebre for any nonsense spewing Progressive Cause that comes down the pike… A Standard Times Columbus Day opinion piece by Uruguayan Journalist Eduardo Galeano of the Progressive Media Project, is typical of what one has come to expect from leftist newspapers on national holidays…

As with any progressive cause, a look at the true historical context reveals much of what is not stated by the “aggrieved“…

To read Mr. Galeano’s take on the conquest of the Americas one would think a crusading horde of Anglo-Europeans capriciously decided to come to the Americas and decimate the peaceful Indians residing on the continents…

Does he mention that gold and raw materials were needed to finalize Ferdinand & Isabella’s reconquest of Western Europe after a 300 year long Muslim occupation?
Of course, any reference to an army of Jihadists being forcibly removed from the Iberian Peninsula in 1492, would give the reader some historical perspective, & the driving imperative behind the Royal Couples “Genocidal” actions, (That’s dangerous ground for a Progressive anything in these Politically Correct times)…

The reality was that ending the Muslim Occupation of Southern Spain required Isabella & Ferdinand to maintain what Samuel P. Huntington called a “Bloody Border” with Islam, which means constantly fielding an army… Every progressive in this world seems to be able to quote facts and figures when it comes to the cost of the Iraq War, yet Mr. Galeano would glosses over the historic realities at play in 1492…

He ignores the reality of & reasons why a rapidly enlightening/industrializing Europe had the need for trade routes other than the Eastern overland routes established by Marco Polo, or the West to East Rounding of Africa by sea; both routes were becoming increasingly more difficult to maintain…

Marauding Muslim Pirates that dominated the East Coast of Africa threatened Spanish shipping interests in the Indian Ocean & traversing the deserts meant dealing with, not only the harsh environment, but a hostile religious enemy that would raid caravans, slaughtering the merchants for both their booty and the pleasure of Allah… Given the political realities they faced, Ferdinand & Isabella quite rightly concluded, to maintain their sovereignty, other means of supplying Spain would be need to be found…

Enter Columbus… Though he failed utterly in what he set out to accomplish, a new untapped resource was discovered… The contrivance that some how the natives were a peaceful lot, fails to take into account:
The Patagonian Warriors who were so feared that the Incas & Mayans never tried to invade that region of South America..
The sacrificial offerings of thousands of human beings made to the Gods by the Mayans… or
The well documented aggression the Apache, Comanche, Crow, Cree & Huron Indian tribes…

After all, White men didn’t wipe out the Mohicans, another group of Peace-Loving, Earth-Worshipping Native Americans did…

People like Mr. Galeanos, (Is that a Mayan Surname?) , wish to cast aspersions at those of us who are the proud beneficiaries of:
Enlightenment
Industrialization
The Anglo-European settlement (Conquest)of the New World & or
All the wondrous advancements to mankind resulting from that very same “Conquest of the Americas“…

Laughably, Mr galeano somehow stakes claim to the moral high ground by asking who are the real Idolaters & Savages in the Modern World?

While I won’t presume to know the answer to that question with any certitude, until I meet my maker… I do know, the hypocrite is the man who uses all the conveniences of the Modern World while denigrating others for doing the same… After all does Mr. Galeanos, live in a tree? Eat off the land? Or travel by pack mule? Somehow I have no doubt that while on any given trek; there is but one Jack Ass in Eduardo Galeano’s party…

You spend an awful lot of time inferring motives and statements that Eduardo never made. In any case, the fact that the Spanish had martial designs on muslim held territory does not negate the suffering that this continent's native people endured. It's like trying to justify the April 7th '03 bombing of the Al Saa apartment complex in Mansour, that killed at least 9 innocents, on the basis of Saddam's "defiance."

Avignon in modern France? The Cordolba Region of Spain? Those aren't Muslim Lands... Yet they were conquered with brutal force by the Moors... All people ever talk about is how Isabella & Ferdinand threw all the Jews out of Spain in 1491... But it wasn't the Jews who controlled most of the Iberian Peninsula it was the Muslims... That's called a revisionist look at history... & It's why you, once again, have no clue what you're talking about... In truth it was remarkable how little time it took for the Spanish to reconsider their conduct in the New World a mere 45 years is really the blink of an eye when you consider the times... Believing these myths that you do, leaves you looking like someone who never actually read a book... As to the apartment being destroyed, what part of War don't you get... It's not a boxing or a wrestling match... According to the rules of war once hostilities are underway there are no safe havens,... We do our best not to hit hospitals and residiential buildings, but they are not off limits... & if one should get hit too bad... If citizens of the hostile country die, so be it, that is the nature of war... Dresden, Hambourg, Tokyo, any of those ring a bell... Bombing campaigns are meant to destroy infrastructure & demoralize the enemy ... You should know that since you so openly support the greatest purveyors of the demoralize the enemy concept, the "Palestinians"... as with most Islamic Military campaigns these days, the Palestinians target innocent women & children almost exclusively, so where have you made an intellectual point here? point?

Indeed, that is the nature of war - dead, dying, maimed, amid devastation and ruin. We should not forget it. We should not forget our actions and their consequences. The bombing of the Al Saa apartment complex is the reality of our Iraq invasion. No "success", rationale, no glory, no liberation, only death and maiming of civilians on a massive scale. How does this do anything but undermine a true war on terror?

I see you shied away from that Spanish designs on Muslim territories rhetoric from your original post... Is there a chance you learned something from a book ? How many attempts were made on Hitlers life during WWII? You need to get your head around the fact that this war on Radical islam is unlike any of its predecessors... We must get into the middle of the muck if we are going to defeat it... That means having our troops in God forsaken hell holes like the Krapistans and Iraq... You don't eradicate a nest of hornets by trying to eliminate all the flowers that they feed off in the surrounding area... You eliminate a hornets nest by getting to the heart of the colony... In this case that means providing an inviting atmosphere for the Jihadist to come out and play with our military.... Iraqs topography is Ideal for our military needs... Afghanistans mountains are not condusive for our military objectives, ergo the need for a second front, or as I like to put it an Inviting atmosphere to come and meet Allah... Not to mention the added advantage of having our military posed to strike Iran when the time comes ... Which could very well happen before the 2008 elections... It's all about the long term strategy for prosecuting the war, not just about Saddam or your friends the Palestinians, & the Taliban... There are Radical Shiites, Sunnis, Sufi's in the Balkans, Indonesias Jemaat-E-Islamayya, The Philipines Abu Sayyaf, The Janjaweed in Sudan, a cocophony of evil exists in this world today... By the Way, that evil has nothing to do with GW Bush, Don Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, Condi Rice et al.. To be honest I have more respect for the Jihadist than I do for you... The Jihadist is at least commited to his cause, where as people like you are just committed to your own civilizations destruction... You swaddle yourself in this blind hatred for Neo-Conservatism & the Bush adminstration, but that hatred blinds you to the reality that the divisiveness you create feeds right into the hands of our enemies, and weakens our (the civilized worlds) efforts... Which is exactly what American hating leftists like you desire...
