In his most recent tribute to lunatics past, James M. Cronin defended Rachel Carson, author of 1962's Eco-Classic "Silent Spring"... The book, took it's title from Ms. Carson's wild speculation that overuse of DDT would kill off all songbirds, & thus leave a "Silent Spring" in its wake...

Sparrow to follow Dodo?

While many an eco warrior used this book to drum up world wide awareness as to the ills of DDT, scientific peer review of most of Ms. Carson's contentions put forth in Silent Spring did not stand up to scrutiny...  One such review is that of Dr. J Gordon Edwards who reviewed the book in an article titled "The Lies of Rachel Carson"...
(See Link Below)

Lies of Rachel Carson

Most of what follows was taken from lain Murray's new book "The Really Inconvenient Truths"

Dr. Gordon Edwards was a committed environmentalist when he first came across the book Silent Spring, & was eager to read it... However, as he got further along in the book he began to be concerned. Edwards writes:
'As I neared the middle of the book, the feeling grew in my mind that Rachel Carson was really playing fast & loose with the facts & was  also deliberately wording many sentences in such a way as to make them imply certain things without actually saying them.  She was certainly omitting everything that failed to support her thesis that pesticides were bad, that industry was bad, * that any scientists who did not support her views were bad.'

After noting how unscientific most of her sourcing was (A pathology endemic to Eco Alarmists  like Carson & James Cronin), Dr. Gordon goes on...
'Finally, I began to join the detractors of Silent Spring, & when hearings were held to determine the fate of DDT in various states of this nation, I paid my own way to some of them so that I could testify against the efforts to ban that life-saving insecticide.  It was gratifying to find that the great numbers of the scientists & health officials whom I had always held in high esteem were also testifying at those hearings, in defense of DDT & in opposition to the rising tide of antipesticide propaganda in the environmental publications & in the media"... Pgs. 33-34 "The Really Inconvenient Truths"...

The next few pages of Inconvenient Truths go on to detail 10 of Carson's biggest factual errors in "Silent Spring"...

It's laughable that Mr. Cronin would site this book as reference when it has been so utterly exposed a shoddy bit of nonsense whose scientific underpinnings have been so thoroughly debunked... Silent Spring is not with out any modern practicalities however, on a cold night it could still be used to start a fire for warmth...

As to Mr. Cronin's contention that no world wide ban was placed on DDT, one doesn't need to place a ban if Governments make Economic aid to under-developed countries contingent upon those countries not using DDT, ( a form of Eco-Black mail), which is exactly what happened... Ergo poverty stricken, malaria infested, countries that still wanted economic aid from Wealthy Countries either stopped using DDT or they quit getting aid packages...
(Witness South Africa's skyrocketing Malaria rates in the  years they stopped using DDT)...

Healthy discussion on serious issues requires scientific research, Mr. Cronin apparently has done none and seemingly relies on research tomes that are more fit more a Funeral Pyre than a serious debate...
