In front of over 85,000 adoring liberals, Barack Obama came down from Olympus and gave a speech that more than pleased the left. With over 38 million viewers at home watching, the upstart Illinois senator gave life to an otherwise confusing and under-achieving DNC from Denver and the Rocky Mountains.

Speaking from a surreal setting of an ancient Greek Temple, Obama had thousands in tears, inspiring those who prefer economic redistribution (Marxism) and an end to corporate loopholes (Profit). Many in the audience, armed with Kleenex and Kodak, listened with their eyes closed as they held hands with others and heard what they had been hoping to hear; Him. He.

He was great. He delivered. He alone caused the polls to show a bounce in his favor. The rest of the entire list of speakers did little to nothing for the cause. In fact, some may have hurt the Democrat's odds. Democrat strategists like James Carville were openly on record speaking down to the confusing and ambiguous message which did not resonate with Americans watching at home but "HE"...was... "HE" was perfect. Divine some might say.

Outside of "HE" though was not so divine. The DNC found itself loaded with speeches from Democrats like VP pick Senator Joe Biden, Senator Hillary Clinton and former President, Bill Clinton who were all in the peculiar position of convincing Americans that what they have been saying  for months wasn't true. All had been trying to convince the same Americans that Barack Obama has no experience, is untested, clueless and his campaign a "Fairytale". The good thing about being a Democrat is you get these incredible Mulligans from the voters who vote for liberals. "All those things I've been saying? Forget it. Didn't happen.  Obama can lead and will be a great president."

Sure! The Clintons say that while the world watches but what about President Clinton and his little analogy just a day earlier? "Suppose for example you're a voter. And you've got candidate X and candidate Y. Candidate X agrees with you on everything, but you don't think that person can deliver on anything. Candidate Y disagrees with you on half the issues, but you believe that on the other half, the candidate will be able to deliver. For whom would you vote?"

If you cannot bring yourself to agree that X = Obama and Y = McCain then please stop reading as this article is for those living in the real world.

Hillary's comment  yesterday is equally interesting as she referred to McCain's choice for VP,  Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, “We should all be proud of Governor Sarah Palin's historic nomination, and I congratulate her and Senator McCain."

This VP pick caused a development which did the unlikely. It eclipsed the Obama speech before the newspaper ink was dry. Senator Obama "erred", "ummed" and "uhhed" his way through interviews yesterday trying to cope with some mean spirited remarks by his surrogates.

John McCain's choice stunned not just the GOP but more importantly the Democratic Strike Force which was frantically investigating for scandals of any kind on the "sure" short list of vice presidential candidates, Romney and Pawlenty. Palin? She was a long shot, perhaps eleventh on the list. Not much on her.

Here is what we do know.......

....we know Sarah Palin is the Governor of Alaska, she was the mayor of a town of just over 9,000 called Wasilla there and before that served on the town's city council. She is a mother of 5, has a son in the Army and her youngest son was diagnosed with Down Sydrome during her second trimester of carrying him. She is a pro-life conservative and lives in a state that banned same-sex marriage before she became governor although she did enact a law that gave protections to same-sex partners such as insurance and other civil union no-brainers. She hunts, fishes and is married to a member of a union. She has a degree in journalism and studied political science as well. She was also a former beauty pageant contestant.

Sarah Palin was instrumental in putting an end to foolish projects such as the Bridge to Nowhere, she has brought down Republicans involved in corruption. Like Senator McCain, Palin is somewhat of a maverick. We know Palin has an 80% favorability rating in Alaska, highest of any governor in the USA.

What is perhaps most interesting here is the Democrats awkward approach to this GOP ticket.

The Democrat strategists are now left with the unenviable task of insisting that America is better off having a novice driver with little more than his learners permit, drive America home with his driver's- ed instructor in the passenger seat instead of having a professional chauffeur drive assisted by an apprentice in the passenger seat. * An apprentice who has more experience driving than that kid with the learners permit and who wouldn't be expected to drive anytime soon.

The other hoot in this is the Democrat's preference to focus on temperament. If I were them, I'd be more concerned with Joe 'Hothead' Biden instead of sitting around waiting for John McCain to blow his stack. Biden, who is a fierce debater, will now do battle with a mom. (And someone has to tell Biden to stop trying to be actor Robert Culp)

This battle for the White House ought to be good TV sitting in my Dartmouth, Massachusetts living room..in a state which somewhat favors McCain and was won by a woman scorned by the Democratic Party. This is also sure to keep my phones ringing at WBSM as the Greater New Bedford/ Fall River, Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard voters react.
