If you ever find yourself being pulled over by police in Massachusetts, you’d better be able to say one of two things; “Do you know who I am”, or “Estoy aquí indocumentados (I am here undocumented).” I’d recommend the latter of the two because sometimes even the rich and famous get pinched by the unimpressed officers.

In the Whaling City for example (nickname for New Bedford), more and more motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) happen between lawfully registered and insured vehicles and unregistered, uninsured vehicles driven by illegal immigrants. Incensed American citizen drivers are told at the scenes “My hands are tied”, or “There’s nothing I can do” by police officers.

Their hands are tied meaning, “Yes”, the collision was the fault of the IAs but “No”, the party at fault will not have their car impounded as is the case for every other motor vehicle found unregistered/uninsured on the roads by law enforcement, not to mention the ones found to have caused accidents.

Americans here are horrified to realize that Mayor Scott Lang’s police force not only allow IAs to drive away with vehicles able to leave the scene of the accident, but these lawful victims also learn that even though they are not at  fault, they or their own insurance company will be paying 100% of the cost to repair their vehicles.

I’m not picking on Mayor Lang but hey, New Bedford happens to be my gig so I will be speaking to the horrid and malfeasant lack of law enforcement here but New Bedford is hardly alone in coddling illegal immigrants.

Rhode Island governor Don Carcieri has been harshly criticizing nearby Providence mayor David Cicilline's administration for refusing to require city police to identify illegal immigrants for possible deportation once in federal hands. The result has been a controversial and consequential decision. Earlier this month, a woman in Warwick, RI was carjacked, beaten and raped by an illegal immigrant who was arrested twice in Providence last year and who had a federal deportation warrant.

An American woman was brutalized by an IA who should have been kicked out long ago if politicians just allowed the police to enforce the law.

This did indeed happen in New Bedford as well. Perhaps you missed my article on
Dougie Lopes and his amigos. Hey, they were just 'enriching' the social life of an undocumented girlfriend.

Getting back to Mayor Lang though, since he was on my show yesterday, he said some things that blew my hair back like, "his insurance should cover it".  He said that when I described a motor vehicle accident involving an illegal immigrant and a New Bedford American citizen named George Machado (son of legal and lawful immigrants). Machado was driving home in the north end as he has been doing for decades now.

Driving straight ahead, minding his own business Mr. Machado was stunned to see an oncoming vehicle veer toward his pick-up truck and smash the rear quarter on the driver’s side also causing major damage to the under-carriage of the truck. George described the accident to me on Sunday morning. In slow-motion detail; the driver of the vehicle decided to take a left hand turn off of Ashley Boulevard but failed to execute the turn when he accelerated too soon and struck the pick-up. George said he saw clearly the panic and lack of faculties in the egg sized eyes of the vertically and English challenged Hispanic, entrepenureal, adventurous young buck who was looking to 'enrich' Machado's paint job.

“Que p-a-s-a-a-a-a”?! SMASH!!!!!!!!

OK so the men in blue show up and after telling his version of events, George is suddenly confronted by an officer for “lying” and has been told that he should now tell the truth since the other driver said he burst out from the wrong direction of a one-way street. Mr. Machado now incensed, insisted that the officer should notice the other vehicle’s plates (from Rhode Island) and to check the status of registration, license and insurance. Woops, let’s see…Nope, nil and nada.

Apparently the vehicle was illegal. Wow. Who woulda’ thunk? Now if George or me or you were to have made the same infractions, we’d be going downtown, cuffed and deservingly so. Because it was clear that the driver was undocumented, he was allowed to make a phone call and have someone drive the vehicle home. Yes, an uninsured, unregistered motor vehicle involved in an MVA driven by an unlicensed, illegal immigrant drove away with the blessing of a New Bedford police officer after causing multiple thousands of dollars in damages. (Don't blame the cop, he is not the policy maker here)

For George Machado, well mayor Lang said his insurance would cover the cost. While this is true Scott, I think what is lost for you is the bigger question; What if George was critically injured and let’s say, paralyzed?

As a personal injury attorney are you satisfied that his $40,000 policy would cover him for the rest of his life in light of the fact that his working days and quality of life were just cut from underneath him by a driver who is unqualified to drive on your city streets and who TODAY is driving around in the SAME damn vehicle?
One of these days, such as the incident in Minneapolis, a resident or a family of New Bedford residents will be wiped off of the planet in a car accident caused by an unqualified, undocumented immigrant and someone will be taking the blame. Anyone care to guess who?

Jack Spillane wrote an article this morning about WBSM being a minority bastion of resistance to illegal immigration, showing me that he is so clueless on this issue that it boggles the mind. 80% of Americans want enforcement now and not just “a devoted slice of the working class city’s population”.
Hey Jack, I love the photo of Comrade Fallon and Father Wilson posing under the Christ as though they were in union with his will on the issue. I wonder if you will put a photo of me and Phil in the paper next time you do a story on the Marxist Fr. Fallon and his kooky concocted communist crackdown on conservatives. Maybe you can put a photo of George Leontire in the paper the next time you do an article about Mark Howland. That would make about as much sense. *1 see below

I couldn't help notice something that was pointed out by Mr. Spillane in the
article. In April of 2006, hundreds of street protests by illegal immigrants and their advocates chanted a particular slogan, "Si, se puede", which means "Yes, we can". Yeah, the slogan of the Democratic presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama. Is this a hint at what Obama is planning to do in terms of citizenship for 13 million illegal invaders to this country? Can we speculate? Si, se puede.

*1 - The online Standard Times has since amended the photo and corrected the situation. In full disclosure Mr. Spillane has nothing to do with the photograph selections. I am happy to thank Jack who is an excellent reporter.
